Alle Aufnahmen von Glenda Collins. Die Tracks 01 bis 06 sind bestenfalls für Komplettisten von Interesse; drei langweilige Singles, die die damals noch völlig farblose Sängerin in den Jahren 1960/61 für Decca Records aufnahm. Joe Meek ist an ihnen nicht beteiligt. Bei den Tracks 07 bis 22 handelt es sich chronologisch um die acht Singles, die Joe Meek mit Glenda Collins produziert hat. Es ist ein Vergnügen besonderer Art, zu verfolgen, wie die Sängerin von einer Platte zur nächsten sicherer und besser wird. Glenda hat nicht das Format etwa einer Dusty Springfield, aber damals populären Kolleginnen wie Petula Clark oder Lulu konnte sie allemal das Wasser reichen. Einige ihrer Songs sind einfach großartige Popmusik. Es ist aus heutiger Sicht schwer zu fassen, dass der armen Glenda mit keinem einzigen davon ein Hit vergönnt war. Ein Grund dafür dürfte wohl darin liegen, dass ihr Joe Meek mit jeder neuen Platte andere Outfits, Frisuren und Images verpasste, so dass sich am Ende der Eindruck völliger Beliebigkeit einstellte - wie die untenstehende Bilderreihe zeigt. Der Sonny & Cher-Song Sing c'est la vie (Track 23) klingt nach einer Acetatkopie; er blieb unveröffentlicht (die CD enthält als "hidden track" noch eine weitere Version). Die Tracks 25 bis 28 sind ein besonderes Schmankerl: vier halbfertige Produktionen, die zu Joe Meeks letzten Aufnahmen zählen und schlicht umwerfend sind. Die Backing Band der Tracks 26 und 27 übrigens ist The Riot Squad (siehe hier). Glenda Collins hat nach Joe Meeks Tod ihre Karriere beendet und einen Job als Sekretärin angenommen. Später heiratete sie einen Rabbiner und sang auf Bar-Mitzwa-Feiern etc. Ein angeblicher Comebackversuch als Cabaret-Sängerin in den achtziger Jahren blieb, sollte er tatsächlich stattgefunden haben, offenkundig erfolglos.
The complete recordings of Glenda Collins. The tracks 01 to 06 are at best of interest for completists; it's three boring singles the then totally colourless singer recorded for Decca Records in the years 1960/61. Joe Meek is not involved in them. The tracks 07 to 22 are in chronological order the eight singles Joe Meek produced with Glenda Collins. It's a special joy to notice how this singer gets better and increasingly self-confident from record to record. Of course, she didn't have the stature of, say, Dusty Springfield, but without doubt she was of equal rank with her then popular colleagues Petula Clark or Lulu. Some of her songs are simply great pop music. Seen from now, it's hard to believe that not a single one of them entered the charts. One reason for this seems to be that with every new record release Joe Meek fitted her with new outfits, hairstyles and images, which finally led to an impression of complete arbitrariness - as the pictures above may show. The Sonny & Cher song Sing c'est la vie (track 23) sounds like an acetat copy; it remained unreleased (the CD includes a second version as "hidden track"). The tracks 25 to 28 are a special treat: four semi-finished productions which fall under Joe Meek's last recordings and are absolutely staggering. The backing band on tracks 26 and 27 is The Riot Squad, by the way (see here). Glenda Collins dropped out of her career after Joe Meek's death and accepted a job as secretary. Later she married a rabbi and sang on Bar Mitzvah celebrations et cetera. It is said that in the eighties she tried a comeback as a cabaret singer, but if so, it obviously didn't work.
